Cleaning Copper Rings with Lemon and Salt: Easy, Effective, Eco-Friendly

If you have worn copper jewelry, you've probably noticed that it can darken over time. But don't worry! Here's a simple way to get it shiny again using just salt and lemon.

Why salt and lemon? Well, if not kept clean, copper can react with oxygen in the air and elements in the environment, forming an oxidized dark layer on the metal called “patina”. Some people love the raw and organic look of well loved and oxidized metal, but if that’s not you then here’s the fix. Salt and lemon are perfect for shining your rings right up because the lemon's acidity helps lift the tarnish, and the salt gently scrubs it away without damaging the stone.

HERE’S HOW-

👩‍🍳Step 1: Gather Supplies

You'll need a lemon, salt, a small bowl or cup, a soft cloth and your copper ring. A small scrub brush or old toothbrush can be useful, but is optional. **Lemon juice from a bottle does work as well! You do not have to use a fresh lemon.

🥣Step 2: Mix

Add equal parts of salt and lemon to your bowl to make a thick paste, add a little more salt to thicken if necessary.

🫧Step 3: Clean the Ring

Scrub the ring with the salt and lemon mixture. You can do this with your fingers, a scrub brush/old toothbrush or a cloth. You will see the bright copper start to come through as the patina is removed.

💦Step 4: Rinse and Dry

After cleaning to your desired brightness, rinse the ring thoroughly with water.

✨Step 5: Buff to Shine

Buff the ring dry with a soft cloth or towel. Do this immediately and don’t skip this step! It is necessary for ultimate shine.

And that's it! Your copper ring will look bright and shiny again. We recommend that you wear your ring when you wash your hands, shower, etc., this will keep it clean and help prevent a patina from developing, but if it ever gets dull again in the future you can always come back and clean it with the salt and lemon method. Enjoy!
